Oh my god, OP, I hear you. I have this one fandom where everyone is into the Hot Male Lead and the tumblr tags are full of stills with "the precious baby" in them. Everyone goes on about how haaawt he is, how hot he is in glasses and without glasses, with a shirt and without a shirt, everyone ships him/waistcoats...

Like... I'm happy people like the canon source, regardless of the reasons. I'm no elitist. And neither do I resent the fact that they talk about him a lot (he's a very good actor, too, and I love the character). But I often feel lonely :/

I get this. I wish tiny fandoms had more diversity but that's a contradiction in terms since if there are about eight people actively participating, it makes sense that they all focus on the same thing.

But then you get the lurkers and the anons who pop up once in a blue moon and say that they wish there was more of this or that - and my advice to that is, if you want other things posted in your tiny fandom tag, you have to go ahead and post them there. This seems to escape a surprising number of people.

If you just don't write or draw though you're kind of boned as far as "go ahead and post them". I mean yeah, theoretically anyone can do either of those things, but it's not really fun or contributing much to draw stick figure shit usually. And if you're not a good writer, and don't enjoy writing, what's to be gained from churning out something god-awful?

I'm not sure how useful the "just write it yourself" advice is. Surely if most of them could do that they already would have? Though even so, reading only your own work for a thing can get old so they would still have something to complain about.

Write you opinions down and pose questions and see if anyone bites and will start a conversation with you.

Sometimes it's nice just to have someone to talk to if you can't have the art and the fic.

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2014-04-06 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Basically what the anon replied. You don't have to draw a masterpiece of digital art or write a 60k epic fic (although you can try a drabble, I think) - all it takes is just a tiny piece of text, a question, a bit of meta. Possibly accompanied by a gif if this is a visual thing. Or link an interview with the writers, actors, what have you. Make one of those question memes.

I'm a bit tired of people sitting back and complaining about the content of their fandom tag and using the "I can't do anything" excuse. Everyone can do something.

/this is not really related to the OP of this secret since they're already doing that

I'm no artist, but several times I've mentioned an idea I've had for a picture and someone else has ended up drawing it because they liked the idea too. You can inspire other people just by talking about things.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN.

There are few things more disappointing than finding out that "Holy shit, this thing I like has 10 fics on AO3!", then realizing, "Oh wait, all but 2 of them are PWP, goddamnit."

Been there. :(

Is that Elizabethan theatre related or unrelated? Is the fandom, perhaps, The Hollow Crown?

Shhhhhh.
It's even more specific than that, but yes.

You could try starting conversations about the topics you want to talk about, but I do think online fandom is focused on sex and shipping. It's understandable, people want what they can't get from the source material, but sometimes I feel like there's so much wasted potential.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I do, and people do talk about the parts I like. But half the time I check in they're talking porn fics, and the other half they're talking things I like, so I feel like I'm only halfway a member of the fandom, and it's isolating and weird.
In other, larger, fandoms, there's so much going on that it's easy to just slide in and join the fun for the stuff I like and leave the porn be, but with something as small as this, it's really noticable that I can only participate in half of the fandom.

Are you using Tumblr Savoir or Xkit? I have similar problems in one of my tracked tags (not with nsfw, but with other stuff I don't want) and it makes the scrolling more bearable.

I don't think anyone would mind terribly much if you just ignored the pornfic posts and liked/reblogged/commented on the other stuff.

For that matter, I don't think anyone not following you would even notice.

Oh no! You're not doing it wrong. I am sorry what your experience has been like. I hope you can find some people in your fandom, which are more like-minded, even if it is small. There must be some out there who are interested in other things than porn.

Sorry OP, all I can suggest is savior sex/nsfw/porn and perhaps make your own non-sex posts to garner conversation? Like, don't demand less sex or mention your objections at all - just try for a bunch of enthusiastic "discussion about X" posts and hope people get on board?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
This is one of the ways that LJ and before that Yahoo!Groups were better than Tumblr. There were whole communities and mailing lists that were blissfully porn free. And back on Usenet you could be blissfully romance free if that was your choice. Tumblr is just a big disorganized mess.

Oh no having to actively think about how you blindly follow. Boo hoo. No seriously. If you don't like what is on your dash? FOLLOW DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you need to find fans outside of "fandom."

Sites like Tumblr, Livejournal, Deviantart are all ship heavy fandom. But generally when you find someone who's a fan of a show/book/etc in the world outside the internet, they like someone for what it is and aren't looking into shipping or porn of it. I mean it's harder to find someone who shares that interest that way... Or does the thing you're a fan of have it's own site?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
This is how I feel about one of the small fandoms I'm in... 99% of the fic written for it (and there isn't much of it) is porn drabbles, and I'm just left wishing someone would write long, plotty, well-characterized fic instead.

Aww, I'm sorry it's so hard to find non-porn, OP!

(I'm... weird, in that I'm usually sex-repulsed IRL, but I do absolutely love smutty fic or well-drawn porny fanart... from both consumer and creator standpoints (but even that depends on the fandom/pairing/character-- some things will absolutely turn me right off and have me running for the hills). But I can understand not wanting anything to do with even the fictional sex you're not a participant in)

It's not always easy to start discussions on tumblr, where it is very easy to reblog links/art, but you can try, there or on other fannish platforms, to talk meta, discuss non-sexual character motivations and backstory...

(Also, if it's a Shakespeare thing, there must be a place where the non-sex-obsessed Shakespeare geeks hang out!)
