I thought one was either agnostic or atheist, how are you both?

agnostic=doesn't think they can know if there is a god
atheist=lacks belief in a god

The "agnostic" part is kinda unnecessary because in many cases "atheist" implies "agnostic", but I want to make it very clear that I am not saying "I know there is no god".

The anons below explained it further. Maybe it'll help! And you're welcome :)

Agnostic means 'without knowledge', and atheist means 'without god'. An atheistic stance means you don't believe in a god/gods, while an agnostic stance means you don't believe you can prove god/gods exist or don't exist. So you can believe but not be able to prove that belief (agnostic theist), or disbelieve and not be able to prove it (agnostic atheist), and either way you'll be agnostic.

One is related to knowledge/proof, the other is related to belief.

This is all well and good, but in my experience, it tends to be used by euphoric fedorabros who are really saying

"Whatever's out there, I know I really hate them xians!"

I don't think it's really necessary to bring that in here.

I think of agnostic as more of a modifier than a separate category. An agnostic atheist doesn't really believe in religion, but also thinks it isn't completely out of the question since we can never really know. Similarly, an agnostic Christian believes in God and all that, but also thinks it isn't completely out of the question that their beliefs might be wrong. Or something like that.
