So then don't participate in that round of the book club and suggest something that is accessible to you for the next one. Sometimes people can't afford things and that's OK. The idea of stealing luxury items you can't afford isn't.

Didn't there used to be a rule here about not promoting piracy?

This is *Fandom* Secrets. If you think fandom doesn't run on 95% piracy, you are very confused.

And i don't really consider books a *luxury* item - they are a necessity. You might notice, however, that i said 'really new or obscure' book, not 'any random book suggested by the group'.

DA

You think a book for a fandomsecrets bookclub is a necessity?

Not even going to touch the whole "all of fandom is piracy!" bs.

*rolls eyes*

I think that if the group decides to read 10 books, and one is really difficult to come by, then finding a pirated copy of that book wouldn't be a big deal.

I think *in general* books are a necessity, not a luxury. Books are (or should be) for everyone, which is why yay! libraries and used book stores, but also yay! for the dl of weird, old books that haven't been published in fifty years (not that i think any book club would have a ton of those, but the possibility of them having one like that is out there.)

Every single person i know in fandom routinely pirates *something*, and i'm pretty sure we've had this particular wank before.

It's wank when people object to promoting illegal activity? And it's ok to steal because everybody you know does it? That explains so much about you and some of the other FS regulars.

Have fun up there on your high horse.

You might notice, however, that the objection is to posting links to pirated copies of all books the club is going to read.

Knowledge is a necessity, not books. As they are not the sole way to access knowledge and book clubs are generally for reading fiction, yes we're talking about luxury items. That you advocate stealing.

And you might notice that other people in this thread noted the site for pirated books and made no objection. I just seem to be the only person that's getting shite about it.

You'll *also* notice other people talking about inter-library loans and whatnot, so that the entire group is actually *not* planning on using links to pirated books.

And yes - books = knowledge, and no, not the sole way to access knowledge but probably the easiest to access for most people.

Don't worry Tabaqui. I'll just...procure the books and let you borrow them!

Heeee.
*smooch*

I can find most anything at Better World Books (yay!), and unless you can read an ebook on your PC, i can't actually read them at all (no kindle or anything).

There is a free program called calibre which can convert most ebook files to something you can read on a computer (PDF and such).

Oh? That's cool. I tend to read only actual books - don't know why, since i read so much fic. I *like* books - i like the smell and feel of them, to *have* them in my hands. I just can't afford all the ones i want.

Yeah. They're cool and all, and like I said below, my favorite author has some epub-only books i'd like to read, but....

Gimme a regular book any day.

Sorry to jump in here and so late but there's a thing called Kindle for PC. I have it since I don't have a regular Kindle. When you buy the ebook (or get the free ones), it asks where you want to dl it. If Kindle for PC is all you have, that's where it goes and you can read the book on your PC. Most of the classics are free and there are lots of .99 books out there.

That's neat. I've never wanted to own a Kindle, but my favorite author has some epub only books i'd love to read.

Thanks!
