Burgess Meredith is a book-loving little mild-mannered, shy man who works at a bank, and he goes down into the big vault every day at lunch to read. He wishes he could just read all day, every day, that time would stop or something, and everyone would leave him alone so he could read.

Then one day, he emerges from the vault (it's in the basement and i think he shuts the door for quiet?) and everything is destroyed, there's been a huge nuclear bomb or *something* (can't remember), and all the people are dead.

So he gathers up all the books he wants to read, has stacks and stacks of them, and all the time in the world....

And falls and breaks his big, thick glasses and he can't see to read at all and that's the end.

(Haven't seen it in forever, so this is kinda vague, but you get the gist.)
