Re: Jewish!Anon Jumps into the Fray

Hi, Jewish!Anon! Thank you for being nice about it. I understand my statement wasn't exactly the epitome of tactfulness.

I'd like to repeat that I was not talking about Judaism as such or, God forbid, Jewish people (seeing as half of my family are Jewish). My opinion is that Judaism is not based on the OT the way a non-religion related ideology would be based on a set of ideological statements (i.e. Fascism, Communism). For the most part, it finds a way to interpret the OT that allows people to ignore the vile parts of the book.

What I do think is that the views of religious Jews are often at odds with what is written in the OT, regardless of what they themselves say about it. And I therefore believe that the way Judaism interprets this text is intellectually dishonest.

Which in no way prevents it from teaching people to be better. So I have zero problems with accepting your statement as regards your relationship with the book.

I am an atheist and I grew up in an area full of Christians. I literally knew no other atheists until I was well into my teens. And yes, I did get told that my ideology was bad and that I would go to Hell. But I think it was wrong of people to say that to me because I was a lonely kid and they were the powerful adult majority, not because nobody should ever insult my beliefs. Plus, telling people that they'll go to Hell has nothing to do with ideologies and everything to do with the speaker's being fucked up in the head.

The people in this thread have actually convinced me that insulting people's intellectual beliefs isn't a good idea unless I'm willing to personally hurt the people in question (which I'm not), and I'd like to apologize to you and to other Jewish&OT Christian folks who might read the thread for my disrespectful treatment of the OT. I still think it's a bad book and Judaism&OT Christianity are intellectually dishonest, but I shouldn't have been rude about it.

Thank you.
