David Weber's Honor Harrington series. A space opera series where the main protagonist is female, the gender of supporting characters is rarely an issue outside of a couple of planets that are viewed as Backwards even by the characters, and romance is not the be-all and end-all of a woman's life.

Honor Harrington was one of my favorite book serials growing up. It's a pity I have no library nearby that stocks them.

My local library system has the first two, but they refused to consider getting the rest "because no one likes scifi".

Maybe that's because your entire scifi collection is shit and old and boring, and you don't stock a single complete series, unless it's a trilogy? I had to give up on the Horus Heresy series three books in, I was not doing the same with HH, so I bought the third book myself. Then my bf bought the rest of them for me.

Be not aggrieved! There is an internet near you that does stock Honor Harrington at http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/ . I've not checked whether it's all of them, but many are there. (How come I'm reading fandomsecrets that are half a year old?)
