I agree. Having been in a position similar to your friend, some people just aren't capable/comfortable with revisiting past fandoms, especially if they parted ways with it on less-than-happy terms. Maybe in time they'll eventually reach a point where they've reached a certain level of peace (or at least, a level where the mere mention of it doesn't always bring up the bad memories), but bear in mind not everyone is like that.

If it's that particular fandom is that much of a discomforting subject to them, then I echo the above anon's suggestion that you might as well have to let the issue drop -harsh as that may sound- and/or seek out other people who are interested in the same thing.
