(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 01:52 am (UTC)(link)Most of her interactions with other revolved about being ogled at - and the joke was that she's actually badass and could cut their heads off. Then again she didn't even liked to fight. That gets old pretty damn fast- just because it wasn't made out to be okay did not make it a superfluous and annoying display of objectification.
The moment another guy turned up later (Neji? or something), the focus shifted to him.
I'm not saying that the other male side kick character was deeper (he was indeed flatter), but I certainly wouldn't read this book for the female character.
If OP would start with this volume, they would probably doubt your otherwise good recommendation.
I mean damn, compare her to Juliet in Unseen Academy. Juliet's not that bright, interested in fashion and a love interest, but she's much more well-rounded in her interactions with other characters. That people ogle her isn't the main joke.
TPratchett definitely got better with his female characters.
