But there are books with terrible female characters in them, exactly as the OP describes - shrill, annoying, or purely existing in terms of their physical attributes. The problem is if you happen on 3 or 4 of these books in a row (easily done) it can seem like it's a bigger problem than it really is.

Publishers aren't that stupid that they'd have the majority of their output be like this. Most book buyers are female.
