The opposite here. I've seen a lot better written women in the average fanfic than the average published novel.

There are fanfics where women characters get bashed because they're in the way of the author's favoured pairing. But these fics are usually easy to spot early on and suffer from multiple other problems as well.

No such back button on published fiction once I realise how appalling the women (and usually also the male) characters are written.
