It's quite common to commission fanfic for charitiable purposes (disaster appeals usually).

Does that really have anything to do with the fic and everything to do with charity.

I don't know why they can't just give the money and be done with it. YOu shouldn't need carrots to get you to be generous.

It's a way of encouraging people to give extra. You shouldn't need carrots, I agree, but that's entirely ignoring human nature.
