I find that it's way easier to find books with well-written female characters if you read stuff by female authors. Not that it's a guarantee, but at the very least books written by women are less likely to have the weirdly sexualized stuff going on.

This. I've realised that when I look at the names of authors I read the list is overwhelmingly female. It appears to be mostly subconscious on my part, but what you're saying is probably part of it.
