C J Cherryh. Not all her books are centered around *just* a female character, but *all* her female characters are, to me, just marvelous.

Of particular interest: Downbelow Station, Forty-Thousand in Gehenna, the 'Angel with a Sword' series (she wrote the first book, the rest are shared world), the Chanur series, Paladin, Rimrunners, the Cyteen novels, Dreamstone and Tree of Swords and Jewels and the Fortress series (for your fantasy needs), also the Russian folklore stories, starting with Rusalka, the Faded Sun series....

OH - and her first, and one of the very best, the Morgaine novels.
