I expanded the comments banking on a thread like this and I am PLEASED.

SO, Dan Well's Partials Sequence! The main character is a 16* year old girl, Indian descent, in training in a post apocalyptic world (after a revolution by biorganic androids) where humans are dying and effectively rendered sterile by a disease. She's interning as a medic-in-training and has a looming mandatory pregnancy law looming (I know, I D: when I read that but it's dealt with well) and she makes various decisions (some good, some bad, most desperate) to save humanity.

The author is apparently normally a horror writer WHICH EXPLAINS SOME SCENES but he makes for a good sci fi writer and Kira is very much a good, well written female character with realistic reactions, confusion, feelings etc etc. Quite enjoyable!

*at the start, she ages as people are won't to do

PS the books covers suck and are poorly designed cliche things, try not to be put off by them like I was. "risk" was totally worth it, really enjoyed the series.

Eta:
Also obvious things like The Hunger Games, Lynn Flewelling's Oracle series, books by Tamora Pierce, John Marsden's Tomorrow series, various Mercedes Lackey books (although she uses rape as a trope a lot, at least she's even-gendered about it?), Michael Crichton books (they're all pretty much warped scifi so take your pick), Raymond E Feist Fearie Tale, Freakangels (ok this is a comic)
