You die. It's that simple.

I kid. They actually brought that up in the books. One dude's daemon became a dolphin. He lives on a boat. I read that and was like, "Well, shit, son."

Geez, I guess you just have to hope your daemon doesn't settle into something unwieldy. Like a dolphin. (Seriously, that SUCKS.)

I know, right?

Seriously, if I ever write an daemon AU that bullshit is ending.

*looks at notes for daemon AU*

I have a midterm coming up. I should not be on this thread. Especially when I already have an answer for this particular conundrum in my particular AU. I should go study.

...FUCK IT ALL! *opens up ALL THE daemon AU notes*

I'm sorry. If you want help I'm here? I have my own reasons and explanations.

Eh, I would have found some stupid reason to put off studying anyway, this is a much better reason than most. :D

I'm actually writing a daemon AU for Star Trek wherein transporter technology has made separating people from their daemons without severing the link between them quite simple and easy. It's basically a science-induced version of the old rituals and training that witches and shamans used to do. All Starfleet personnel are required to do it. At the academy, they have a long room (about 200 feet long) and they just transport people from one end of the room to the other. It's quick, easy, and painless, but a little scary nonetheless.

For non-Starfleet types, most only do it if their daemon settles as something big and unwieldy, like a bear or a horse (or anything else that would be difficult to bring with you to the grocery store).

Sounds interesting. I normally go about it by saying that it has to be done before a daemon settles because of the attempts of doing on adults in the books always ended with disaster.

When you finish writing it let me know.

otoh, a daemon is part of its person, not a separate entity, so I think the boat-life would have fit the guy well.

still, it's terribly constricting and inflexible. I would not want it.

I think they actually went into that in the books
