Animal madness

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
There is a chance that my family may be getting a puppy and/or a kitten soon (different sources, different factors in whether or not either will happen). Adding another cat to the house is totally feasible, and under the circumstances (the circumstances being "my grandmother has been feeding a pregnant stray") we all feel obligated to lend a hand (and we're all hopeless cat people). But no way do we need another dog, especially a freaking German shepherd and especially since my dad (who's the one who wants it) has already said that he'll take care of the basic dog upkeep but my mom and I are solely responsible for training it. We already have four adult dogs that are ill-mannered hooligans; it should be obvious that we are good at keeping dogs happy and loved and cared for but not at making them into productive members of society.

Seems completely unreasonable that your dad wants a dog but wants nothing to do with training it. And yeah, unless you live out in the country or on a farm or use the dogs for work or something 5 dogs seems like way too much.

I'll cross my fingers for the kitty, anon!

Damn, I hope you're able to get training for the four dogs that need them. And German shepherds are awesome, but I agree, it doesn't sound like a good fit for you guys right now.

good luck however it goes down.

I should specify that "ill-mannered hooligans" was meant with all love. Their bad behavior is of the "they bark a lot* and attempts at leash-training them only really worked on one of them" kind, rather than aggression or destructiveness. Stuff "we" (read: my parents) have decided we can live with, but which won't fly with a dog that's going to outweigh the other four combined when it grows up.

*As do the dogs owned by virtually everyone else in the neighborhood, so it's not like we're oblivious to problems this could be causing for others.

Ah, ok, I understand! And yeah, my dogs are pretty well-trained and very sweet but they will bark at anything. I think it's largely just a dog thing.

Do you not have local bylaws limiting the number of dogs you can have? Everywhere I've lived there's been a limit, even on farms.

Yeah this. Though, most people in the country where I live tend to ignore the by laws.

Ooo, yea, I can understand wanting more dogs because dogs are awesome, but if he doesn't want the responsibility of helping train the dog and you guys are already having difficulties with your household full of pets, it's probably for the best that you get another cat, or just leave well enough alone for now.

Let's hope he changes his mind? Or you can talk him out of it.

German shepherds are great, intelligent and wonderful in many senses. BUT they aren't easy to have, precisely because they're intelligent dogs.

They need to be very well trained and need people to dedicate a lot time to them, because they need far more activity and challenges that other dogs.

So please, convince him to not get one.
As great dogs as they're, they need more than you all seem to be able to give to it.

And honestly, four dogs already seems too much. Even having another pet may not be the best idea, as any animal needs its own space and adding another because it's "feasible" is still not ideal for the dogs/cat.
