Re: It's been a while since I've read anything of hers, but I don't remember her as being mean at al

IIRC, a long time ago (in the middle aughts) someone did an in-depth literary discussion/analysis of one of her fics--meaning nothing but a compliment--and rageprufrock got, well, ragey, in an incredibly verbose way, and compared the act to rape.

links? Elaboration?

I'm sorry: I was wrong

about her having compared having her work discussed to being raped; she actually compared it to being murdered and dismembered.

Here's the link to the fandom wank post where narcissam tells the story, and here's rageprufrock's reaction to having her work discussed and (mostly) praised:

So let's peel back that veneer for a minute and say that when I log onto this community and find my work stripped apart like a Ripper-victim, with both elegant admiration and vicious discontent, I'm allowed a moment of shocked numbness. I am, in fact, allowed to feel shitty and insulted and hurt...

You forgot the link to the fandom wank part. I want to see it.

da

lol so she responded negatively once to someone criticizing her in 2005.

this is a rather long and petty grudge to hold.

remembering something negative about someone = grudge, now?

When someone is that self-important and melodramatic, it's memorable.

ayrt

"that self-important and melodramatic" -- sure she probably could have been more mature about it, but have you seen the rest of fandom? in terms of wanky, melodramatic behavior, this doesn't even register. if someone who wasn't a bnf did this, literally no one would give a shit.

Maybe not, but BNFdom does go to people's heads in pretty noteworthy ways.

Here's the link to the Fandom Wank report:

Thanks.

The whole thing's from 2005. Seven years ago.

I can't believe that these discussions about how angry some authors have when they get any comments at all beyond pure squee has been going on for so long. For some reason I thought it was a recent development, but obviously not.

From my experience, it can be the most surprising writers who react this way. Ones who even write quite intelligent, thoughtful fic.

It was hard to confirm this particular wank because rageprufrock deleted all her entries that fandom_wank linked to. Probably for the best.

oh shit, wow. I mean, it's different for everyone, but if someone did a literary analysis of one of my fics, I would be dancing around the living room for days.

Seriously.

I'd also be laughing my ass off, because I don't generally write things to be "literary," but if someone wanted to do it as a mental exercise, more power to them.
