I was originally planning on leaving out the witches and bears, but then I got ideas, namely around Tony. First it was the idea that Tony's mom was a witch, which made her and Howard's deaths all the more traumatic - Tony grew up fully expecting his mother to outlive him and suddenly losing her threw everyone for a loop. Also, Jarvis - the original one, not the AI - was an armored bear, with the canon pronunciation because Tony's affectionately mangled mispronunciation of the Nordic spelling. He is also how/why Tony was able to make everything himself
IN A CAVE! FROM A BOX OF SCRAPS!in captivity in Afghanistan - Jarvis taught Tony some elements of ursic black-smithing.Also, because bears, 'ursic' is a word in this world, technically meaning bear-like but almost exclusively used to mean "like armored bears" not "like bears (in general)".
/needs to stop with the worldbuilding
And I've started the address the 'leaving' issue in the little bit I have posted here! Namely, I imply that nowadays there is a type of 'surgical' procedure available to make it safe to leave a daemon behind. There is some actual backstory, though (which also doubles as 'how Howard and Maria met in the first place').

For me I took a literal imaginings from the books of stretching the bond over a lake or river until it snapped. I treat it like people treat vaccines today, everyone gets it done except those considered not healthy enough. Well, and those who use mostly pseudoscience to believe in the dangers of it. But everyone thinks they're full of it anyway. It also has to be done before the daemon is settled. I'm pulling this from the part of the book where a man died from straying too far from his wolf daemon due to hot air balloon. So you'll see a bunch of kids getting on the ferry to go to New York while their daemons stay on Liberty Island or something. And it's just there, in the background, a normal thing like brushing your teeth.

In my world, these Dust-dead zones exist, and rare instances of humans happening to accidentally get separated from their daemons in these zones and survive are the historical 'inexplicable' instances I mentioned earlier. WWII was when a few witches were finally persuaded to help humans study the process - Maria being one of them, leading her to meet Howard. The 'Dust-neutral' aspect was discovered soon after WWII was ended, and a way to pull it off 'artificially' was created around the time Tony was born. As a kind of political stunt/proof that it was safe, Maria and Howard (both already Separated, Howard having done the 'traditional' way himself) have Tony separated as a child. This leads to some other problems* down the road, one of the weirdest being that despite being human, his daemon settles into a hummingbird.
* = even though it's "safe", humans really can't tolerate being separated from their souls (it's worse than randomly leaving behind a vital organ that still impacts your body somehow - if anything happens, you're screwed, so best keep it in sight). Because of this mentality, people avoid Separation until absolutely necessary, and the fact that Tony got Separated as a child led to problems down the road (though also at least made it a law that daemons have to be settled before there can be any artificial Separations, and in most places they have to be adults, too).
And no, JARVIS is an AI, just one named after Jarvis and sharing many personality traits. Jarvis the bear originally needed to get out of bear society for a while due to politics and went to Howard due to some owed favors from the war (which the bears were peripherally involved in). Around the time Tony took over SI, Jarvis went back to bear society, hence why Tony built the AI. Jarvis visits every now and then and finds JARVIS funny as hell. :D

Wait, why is it weird that it's a hummingbird?
Aw, that sounds cute.

Hummingbird = bird, which generally is something humans don't settle as because their daemons can't safely leave their side. While witch daemons are all birds, bird daemons are extremely rare among humans.
No toy teddy bear will ever suffice for Tony Stark after having grown up being practically raised by an actual bear, there is just no matching that kind of sheer cuddle power. And he is very lucky Jarvis loves him enough to overlook the fact Tony Stark calls him his very own real live teddy bear. :P That said, this plays more seriously into how and why Tony is the way he is: he was raised by every sentient species on the planet (a human, a witch, and a bear), which gives him a lot of connections and a lot of unusual insight in life.

Sadly, you can really do whatever you want because the dude was not that great at worldbuilding or being internally consistent.
Oh, I forgot about that. *shrug*
Hmm... that is interesting. He probably thinks sideways because of it.
