I watched the anime a few months back and Kino's design stuck out to me, too. It was unconventional and different and I really love it. :D

They succeeded so well with the androgynus design that translators were confused and the first episode preview I saw made her male in the subtitles X'D

The impression I have is that Kino's gender was deliberately vague, even in the Japanese.
