Well, if Hell is a place where you are tortured forever, then nobody can deserve Hell, no matter how horrific their crimes, because in the span of a finite human life it is impossible to do anything that warrants infinite punishment.

Even Hitler?

Forever is a really, really, unimaginably long time. The universe is about 13.7 billion years old. Kick that up by two orders of magnitude - about a trillion years. Maybe Hitler deserves to be tortured for that long. Maybe he deserves to be tortured for that long for each person he was responsible for killing or harming, directly or indirectly. That's a period of time longer than most people can begin to comprehend. But at the end of it, there's still more forever. So no, I'm not sure that any human, no matter how many atrocities they commit, can ever earn a punishment that lasts forever during a single human lifetime.

...can we not do this please? The "Christians" vs. the "atheists" threads taking over errrrrything here lately are really starting to wear thin.

Also? There is no "Hell" in the standard Christian Bible. It speaks of the grave, the garbage dump, and a metaphorical place used to illustrate a parable (Dives and the Rich Man). Some Christian denominations do believe in Hell, and these denominations are in the majority, but that doesn't mean 100% of Christians believe in it. Especially not ones who actually read the book the others only thump loudly.

The comment that you're replying to didn't mention Christianity or atheism. It only mentioned hell, and one particular conception of hell, which is kind of relevant to the secret.

Don't get defensive, no one was even talking about Christianity. It's a philosophical comment, and will only become religion wank if you insist on it.

No one brought up any of that. Try actually reading shit before commenting.

This...is pretty much exactly my thinking about it.

I still have yet to come to a conclusion about exactly what I believe about hell. I have a hard time just accepting this cut-and-dry explanation that many of my fellow Christians use, but I also have a hard time making much clarity about from the text (admittedly, I am not terribly well-studied).

Also, I wasn't even going to get into this thread, since I have a headache and it's a very, very heavy topic that I've struggled with for years and that can hit hard emotionally if I let it, but your thinking was just basically exactly mine and I really wanted to comment because I've never seen anyone else spell it out like that before :)

I agree 100%. "Hell" is particularly cruel and horrible human philosophical invention. Infinite torture? Just no, no one could actually deserve that.

Hell & The Lake of Fire

(Anonymous) 2014-04-10 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
The modern concept of hell comes from Dante not the Bible. Hell is actually right here on Earth. This is Lucifer's Domain. Just look around and see what he has tempted mankind to turn the garden that God gave us into and you can recognize the truth of that.

According to the Bible the wages of sin is death, on judgement day an evil unrepentant sinner is cast into the Lake of Fire where the soul is snuffed out like a candle flame. Eternal Death instead of eternal life.

Religion makes my head hurt. :^(
