Threesomes in fic

(Anonymous) 2014-04-09 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I'm thinking about writing a fic sequel in which two male characters I've established as bi and put into a relationship in the first story sometimes have threesomes with an OC woman because the guy who previously thought he was straight still misses women sometimes and the other guy is OK with that.

But I'm a little worried it's offensive in that "bi people can't be monogamous" kind of way. On the other hand, the emotional arc of the story would be the late-blooming guy getting over the last of his gay-sex hangups and being in an even better relationship with his partner, which...might make it better...or might just make it more offensive?

SO CONFUSED.

I don't think its offensive as long as you aren't saying that all/most bi people can't be monogamous. Because some people aren't monogamous regardless of orientation and that's okay too.

It doesn't sound like Character A is cheating on Character B. They mutually agreed to have threesomes, yes? So...I'd say you're fine.

Do it anon. It will either turn out exactly as you want, and if it doesn't you can just scrap it and not show anyone. :)

Seconding. I predict the way it comes off will be all about what you emphasize. You can definitely pull it off.

Don't worry too much about what's offensive; write what feels sexy and true.

That's a storyline that I'd read, if it were in a fandom I knew. I love complicated getting-over-gay-hangups fics with bisexual characters.

It doesn't come across as offensive as you describe it. Unless your fic implies these characters aren't acting as individuals, but as some kind of cliche for all bisexuals.

To be honest, if I was your reader I wouldn't be offended necessarily but pretty disappointed if my OTP hooked up in #1 and they're doing threesomes in #2.

They're not solely doing threesomes. They're still very much a couple, it's just sometimes they add a friend with benefits to scratch an itch.

Don't worry about it? People are individuals, and that's how a good character should also be treated. Unless your characters suck and are flat representational non-people, there's nothing to get worked up over.

DO IT

do you need the Official Stamp of Bi Approval? here it is *stamps both your hands and your forehead*

seriously, the only issue of bi representation in fiction I'm interested in is "acknowledgement that bi people exist once in a while." It sounds like this is a story you've thought through, and nothing about it says "pile of stereotypes" to me. Take those freshly stamped hands and go wild, ok?
