Being sociable in fandom

(Anonymous) 2014-04-09 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm finding tumblr and twitter really unsatisfying as fandom platforms. Am I missing something? Is there somewhere else that fans are hanging out and being sociable about fandom? I miss the days of LJ and email groups.

I do too.

But I can't find any other places. T_T

Yeah, you have to go out of your way for discussions on twitter and tumblr. I know that artists will do livestreams to interact with people, but mostly I think you get chummy with people there and eventually exchange skype names, irc hangouts, or something.

And yeah, I hear you.

AYRT Something's got to be done. I just... don't know what.

My hope is that tumblr eventually falls out of favor for the next big thing, which is actually good for socializing and discussion.

Well, I'm talking to myself over at poppedbubblewrap.blogspot.com. Someday I could envision it being like the places of yore.

I'm never too comfortable taking fandom stuff to blogspot or wordpress. Not sure why, it just doesn't feel very fandom friendly?

I didn't mean like "go to blogspot to find a bunch of fandom blogs!" I meant "here's this one particular blog that is kind of like F!S General Comments (only maybe with less RL drama)." Or, will be if anybody ever shows up.

^anon from above

I love this place! Just... we're a small, and non-specific fan community.

That makes me so sad. I mean, it's great and active here now, but it's one tiny corner that won't last forever. Man.

Let me know if you do... I miss messageboards myself, but while I've found great active multipurpose ones, it's hard finding ones for specific fandoms that are a, active, and b, welcoming towards newbies.

This is why I like f!s so much, it's just easier to interact with people in communities than on twitter or tumblr. Not saying it can't be done, it's just a lot more effort.

Yeah, I haven't been on tumblr in like a month. It's not even because of any of the popular f!s whipping boys (SJWs, etc). I just kind of stopped. I feel kind of bad about it sometimes when I get a notice that I got another new follower for some reason.

Well, there's still Plurk. I just got an account there recently and fandom still seems to be kicking on it.

I'm so lucky I found an active LJ community for my fandom. Everyone is so nice and it's what drew me back into fandom. (It's for Revolution)

I go to fail_fandomanon on livejournal. It's panfandom and all anon. Good for rambling conversations about everything under the sun - even though you don't know who you're "talking" to.

LJ is still alive and kicking, you just have to find the right people and places. I just did my (first ever) friending meme on LJ (a sort of 'we're still here!') thing, and over 1000 people joined up and commented and whatnot.

So - what are your fandoms? I'm sure there is still stuff going on on LJ/DW that you join.

I feel your pain, anon.

Sometimes you just have to create your own forums, though.

I also wish I could connect with fandom stuff with people locally, but I refrain for two reasons. 1) I don't want to be friends with someone just because they happen to like the same book or video game, because I don't think it would be fair to them, and 2) the horror stories I've heard here about fandom meetups.
