Eh, if they don't like the ending, they can complain about it in the book club, yes? :3

(I'd say one of the Discworld books, but my fav is and always will be Nightwatch (followed by Thud!, and I don't know how well those'd go as first-Discworld books. ^^;)

Ah well, I suppose so. And I personally liked it, it had been so long since I read something that tied up all the strings so neatly. Well maybe someday we could begin with Guards! Guards! then, widely recommended as the starting point for Discworld books? I'm just wondering how many people there are here who have read them. How many Discworld anons are there, actually?

I adored the ending. :D

Maybe! Though, honestly... I'm not sure if Guards! Guards! is the best place to start, personally. I feel like it shows that it's one of his earlier books, and I know that when we tried to read it in a different bookclub, the end status wasn't that it was bad! But that it was meh, and no on really wanted to read other books by Terry Pratchett...

Going back in time, I wish I could have smacked my younger self over the head with a copy of Nightwatch, because reading it is what got me into Discworld properly, but there was so much I didn't *get* because of where I started. ^^;

IDK, maybe it was just my book club? |D

Oh, really? I loved Guards! Guards!. But then, I read the books in really bad order, I started with Unseen Academicals, then I read Eric (which I thought was BRILLIANT), then I read Making Money, Going Postal, Thud!, and then I went back to Guards! Guards! So ... yeah, maybe I'm biased because I'd already be in love with Vimes and Vetinari by then. Maybe we could start with Going Postal or The Truth instead? Those can stand alone without knowing anything about the other books and are very good in getting you into the world itself.

Yeah. I mean, going back and rereading Guards! Guards!, I do like it! It just feels very "young" to me. ^^;

Going Postal or The Truth could be cool!

Oooh, what if we did The Hogfather in December and watched the movie in the shit stream? O_O

Or Soul Music!

(Have you seen either of those adaptations? :3)

Oh, reading Hogfather in December and then watching the adaptation would be awesome! I haven't watched it yet because I have a bad case of TV laziness (I can't be arsed to watch stuff), but I know most people say it's good and I liked (most of) the casting. I did like Soul Music (my baby Drumknott's first speaking role!) but it's not a good place to start if you want to get into Discworld, Hogfather would be a better choice.

Ooh, who didn't you like, casting-wise?

True, true. Maybe someday... |D

This is going to sound so petty and pointless of me, but ... Lord Downey. His actor didn't half match up to what Downey is in my head. And I have a small but firm fondness for Downey so it kind of made me go >:(. Everyone else was perfect as far as I could tell though!

Ah, I don't think I had a good enough picture of Lord Downey to be disappointed, but for some reason, the random watch guards that DEATH runs into just didn't seem "right" to me. I don't know why, though...

Personally, I would love to start reading Discworld books. I've read The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents and The Wee Free Men, but I don't know where to start with his other books.

Eh, pick another one up and you'll find your way. That's what I did. But if you want to avoid further spoilers, you could start with Guards! Guards!. If you don't care about some minor spoilers (they certainly didn't ruin anything for me), you could jump right into his later books (starting from 1996, the start of him writing some of the most brilliant books in the series). I wouldn't start with Night Watch like loracarol said though, I think you really need to know the characters first before you can totally immerse yourself in the emotional impact it would bring.

You can read in 'themes' - the Watchmen books, the books about witches, the books about Tiffany, the books about Death and his family.... Kinda depends on what you're most interested in.

The first three, i think, are mostly about Rincewind, who kinda vanishes from the 'verse eventually.

Small Gods is my favourite and Nightwatch is a close second. They're the two Discworld books he wrote before about 2010 that everybody hated :(

wait, what

Not only do I like those, I honestly thought Nightwatch was close to being a consensus pick for best book in the series. I guess I must have got that wrong...

Small Gods is unpopular, yes, but Night Watch? That's one of his most popular books! Widely considered the best book although these people have clearly yet to read the Lipwig books I personally disagree.

Nightwatch is brilliant, but yeah, it might be an odd starting point. Perhaps one month we could have a "discworld" themed poll?

Also, apropos of nothing, here's something I didn't know: Dreamwidth doe not let non-paid accounts create polls. that was a fun discovery. I am putting together a work around now.

Yeah, I agree. Though a Discworld theme poll might be fun!

...I did not know that either. Hm. Maybe a different website/outside of dw thing? Like, I know people can do polls on google, I think?
