I know - no one wants to see the gay on TV, at least not as applied to long-beloved characters woven into the fabric of a national culture.

No, I'd be happy if a version of the Holmes&Watson duo were gay. But not this one. This move requires some actual thinking and carefully made character alterations. You can't just take a random character, say "look now they are gay, it changed absolutely nothing!" and be done with it.

If you want good examples of gay Holmes&Watson being done well, go to the ACD canon fandom. Lots of great slash fic. If that stuff were made into a TV show, I'd be the first one cheering. (though IDK if I'd actually watch much of it. I'm not really interested in any on-screen romance the point of which is not character development).
