Because the show creators repeatedly said that 1) Sherlock is not asexual (which is like... ughhh) and that 2) He's not in love with John.

For what it's worth, I don't think the UK is very broad-minded when it comes to media. IRL, yeah, but if Sherlock does make Sherlock and John a couple, there is going to be a shitstorm one of the causes of which will be homophobia.
