pre-Wonder Woman Amazon society?

[personal profile] silverr 2014-04-10 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been trying to find some general info on pre-Wonder Woman Amazon society -- specifically, on what might plausibly get an Amazon exiled from Paradise Island (currently known as Themyscira).

I've googled, poked at the wikipedia entry, the DC wiki, and a few Comic Vine forum topics, but so far haven't found much (other than an article saying that the misandry is more a nu52 thing).

Does anyone have any suggestions for newbie-tolerant forums or comms?

Amazons didn't really do exile. They were more like, "Oh, you screwed up big time. Guess who is getting a beheading?" or "Oh, you screwed up big time. But you have a chance to redeem yourself. You just have to do a fight to the death with the biggest, baddest warrior on the Island and not die."

For all of Diana's mission of being peace and harmony to world of man, her people were an extremely violent bunch. And if you caught her on the right or wrong moment, so was she.

So that's the punishment, but what were the "crimes" for which you'd get beheaded?

Not much. Amazon society was pretty well maintain. The only thing I can think of is trying to over throw the throne. That will get you a beheading.

Or if we're going with the really early Wonder Woman comics, "Oh, you screwed up big time. Guess who's getting some hardcore bondage time to learn the error of her ways?"

From what I remember, they mostly executed people who fucked up.

*nods* From the little I have picked up so far, it does seem as though they got harsher and more warlike as time went on, so I'm trying so sort of extrapolate backwards, to 1000 A.D. or so, to theorize an explanation for Exoristos' exile in Demon Knights.

(Though I already realize that comic-book canon is much slipperier than I'm used to: they refer to the island as Themyscira when strictly speaking it was still Paradise Island back then.)

one mangaged it. But she's not talking about what happened and she's not exactly the type you force an answer out of.

Whatever it was though, there's a bounty on her and and she's me mentioned it's something they perceive about her, that they will not accept her "as she is"

As it happens, that's why I'm asking. ~

I'd like to invent a backstory that's at least somewhat plausible, and I was trying to get a sense of what transgressions might lead to exile rather than death. (I already have a few possible half-theories, but I'm trying not to get too attached to them.)

P.S. Off topic, but who's your fav character in that series?

hard to say, but if I have to pick just one, Vandal Savage eating "dragons" was the first page I ever saw and was what got met o read the comic. So lets go with him.

He certainly brings a lot of the humor. Is that standard for his character in his other appearances?

Not really. He matures eventually and becomes more "patient immortal" villian. Though the savagery comes through sometimes.

...

Sooooo .... he's forcing his daughter to run the gauntlet othewise he'll kill her mother? Yeesh.

(Seriously, context? Because this seems orders of magnitude past messed up. Is it a "what does not kill you makes you stronger" thing, or is he just a xxxxopath?)

I'm not familiar with the Wonder Woman canon, but I am decently familiar with Greek mythology, and you can get anybody exiled with a prophesy.

ohhhhhhh ... that's actually a superb idea within the context of Exoristos' storyline.

(Want to de-anon so that I can credit you?)

True, but technically the subject(s) of almost every fandom aren't "real" either, but (for me at least) the fun of writing fanfiction is playing according to the rules of the imaginary universe.
