(nitpick) to be fair, ripping into someone's writing behind their back is basically what "a bad review" means to the non-fic-writing public. If you say a published novel "got a bad review", then that means that someone wrote something negative about a book without consulting the author, and without the author's improvement in mind.

Uhhh yes okay but the secret is explicitly about fanfic and has nothing to do with publishing novels or w/e so I really don't know what your point is here.
