Characters you headcanon as being depressed

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What characters do you, in your headcanon, think are suffering from depression, and WHY do you think this?

Obviously does not apply to characters who are canonically depressed.

Loki. I mean...he did try to kill himself at the end of Thor. Though I sort of consider him to be more bipolar.

John Watson in BBC Sherlock, but I think this is canon?

Can't think of anyone else right now.

Steve Rogers, full stop. Just, the way that Chris Evans plays him, with his actions, and the way he reacts to things (his joy at recognize one reference in The Avengers, for example).

I was totally going to mention him! But I have yet to see Captain America 2 so I don't know if he still acts that way (but I assume he does).

I think it still fits, honestly. Without getting into too many spoilers, he felt (to me) like he was 'going through the motions' a lot prior to the main events, and it's only over the course of the movie that he begins to find a purpose. "Yes, he helped save New York from the Chitauri, but then what after?" is how I read his acting, though I might be reading too much into it.

Yes. I mean SPOILERS BELOW

He says in CA2 that he doesn't know how to be happy. His final act is to drop his shield and prepare to die because he doesn't want to live anymore.

He would have let Bucky kill him :( He didn't even fight as he fell. He was just ready for death, it seemed.
elaminator: (Captain America: TWS - Steve (concerned))

I think Steve was just so tired at that point, of losing people, of fighting, of running, and not feeling like he had a purpose that when he came across Bucky again, his best friend, and he wasn't remembering...it felt like the last shred of hope he had was gone, and rather than keep on fighting or even killing Bucky he would gladly allow Bucky to kill him instead. He wouldn't have to deal with any of it anymore if he was dead.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this.

After CA2, I headcanon him as depressed and suicidal.

Dean Winchester.

Practically ever hunter ever, really, at some point in time if not perpetually.

Punpun Onodera, though it's pretty heavily implied in canon.

Do you mean clinically depressed for reasons beyond their circumstances? Because in a lot of shows, people have every reason to be depressed.

On Farscape, especially in the later seasons, Crichton often seemed bipolar, swinging between highs and lows.

Matsumoto Rangiku from Bleach.

She grew up really poor and starving before getting her break as a shinigami. Her spiritual pressure got partially stolen as a child which stunted her growth so even with decades/centuries of training she hasn't, and might never, achieve bankai. Her captain disappeared on a mission, likely leaving her to hold the division together until a new captain could be trained and promoted. She got passed over for captaincy in favor of the kid who held the position below hers. Her best friend since childhood/possible lover became a murderer and betrayed her and everyone to fulfill a convoluted plan to get her stolen power back but failed and died. After two years of extra training she was still taken out relatively easily by the new enemy.

I agree that she's got reasons, but when you look at it, nearly every major and secondary character in Bleach has just this kind of tragic and depressing background -- and for the ones who so far don't, it will probably be revealed that they actually do. The background angst is laid on pretty thick in Bleach.

Man, now I'm thinking of all the characters in that might be/probably are depressed. It really is a long list.

Light Yagami, pre-Death Note. Reclusive, quit activities he previously enjoyed, has negative thoughts about the world, uninterested in typical activities.

Percy Weasley. I just dont see how the family estrangement and vitriol ends any other way.

Kevin Ryan on Castle but only when his friends abandoned him and he was mostly "a one-man band" of senior homicide detectives.

Well, that's kinda hard to say. Practically everyone in the Hunger Games trilogy walks away seriously damaged in some form, although they never use words like "depressed."

I think one of the better parts of Tolkien is Frodo's melancholy.
