Freaking out

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm applying to this college summer art program and I'm freaking out about it. I'm already a little late in the game, the deadline for applications is in about two weeks. There are only a couple of seats left. I think it's really a long shot to get in. I only have two references, and one is for my minimum wage job. That doesn't look good. I would have a perfect reference in one of my old teachers, but she probably doesn't remember me. (She is since retired and has Alzheimer's.) I could go see a counselor for advice on this, but then I'll have to wait till Monday to see one and the class could be filled up by then. Ughh.

That sucks, anon. Maybe explain about your teacher in your personal reference? If you think the program's likely to fill up before the weekend is out then just shoot for it.

Good luck!

I'd say get your application in ASAP. Mostly because I don't think your counselor is going to have very good advice, or at least not advice that will make a significant impact. They're not going to pull a reference out of thin air for you or make your old teacher remember you (which really does suck and my condolences, anon).

Unless the reference letter is from someone they know anyway, I think the majority of the focus will be on whatever portfolio you submit. Otherwise they usually just serve as "oh, this person has proven work ethic" checks.

TL;DR = focus more on your portfolio, less on your references, get your application in, and best of luck! <3

That does suck.

Don't look at the minimum wage as a point against you. You performed honest work for honest pay, and I'm willing to bet that job was hard and strenuous at times. That's nothing to be ashamed of.

If you don't get in, could you take a year and build up a portfolio, get more references and apply next year?

That is arse. Good Luck. Hope it pans out for you.
