When have you ever seen anyone up in arms because someone said that such-and-such antimicrobial retarded the growth of their bacterial cultures? (Admittedly, that's a verb rather than an adjective, but...)

In legal and medical contexts, yes, but it's actually being phased out of use in many of those contexts (much as the medical use of 'idiot' and similar terms was before it), so there's justification for complaining about individuals and organizations that are behind the times.
