Maybe it's because so much adult media nowadays is so dark? Like the whole "grimdark cynical" thing that was in comics in the 90s has sort of flowed onto other media, like fantasy novels & science fiction and other stuff.

There's not a whole lot of alternatives to that, so it makes sense to me that some people would gravitate towards something like MLP, because it's so lighthearted & inoffensive.
