Yeah, I agree -- the story of him, Jecht, and Braska was really heartbreaking. When I first heard rumors of FFX-2 I desperately wanted it to be about their journey.

I don't know if you're into doujinshi, but there's some really great stuff to be had. I personally recommend Umi Ga Ochiru Toshi -- even though it's an unfinished series -- it's amazing. (But, uh, unless you're also a Jecht/Auron shipper you might not enjoy it so much.)

I actually enjoyed FFX both for the present day storyline and the whole Jecht, Braska and Auron story, but those spheres were amazing. Couldn't wait to get new ones.

(Oh, and I read all the Jecht/Auron back in the day, but I never thought to look at doujinshi. Should have.)
