Blogging - what to talk about?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone have a blog, outside of LJ/DW? I have one but I never know what to post, how to get traffic when I do post, etc. Of course I'm even having the same problem with LJ these days too, I have no idea what to post about anymore. It was so easy when everyone on my flist was generally in the same fandom, AND I had things to say about that fandom. I have fandoms now, but they're TV shows so how much I have to say depends on how much happened or didn't last episode. :/

tl;dr how do you come up with topics for these things?

Is it so important to have a popular blog? If you want to... I don't know, commercialize it or something, that's going to be a lot of work. You're be writing for an audience, likely for no pay. I think it'd just be easier to blog whatever you want/like and hope that people who like the same things find you.

It doesn't have to be popular, of course - I would like more comments, but that's not a big deal to me. My real concern si figuring out what to say.

I kind of write book and TV reviews, but I haven't done anything about it in ages. I also have a fashion/textiles blog which will only really pick up when I move out of this small town where nothing interest happens to report on.

I used to have this problem when I was on LJ and there were lots of commenters about. Everyone else seemed to be talking about a mixture of fandom and RL. I tried to join in, but I was always highly uncomfortable about making RL posts (I'm fine in comments, just not in posts). I felt like I was doing it wrong by not wanting to join in with the personal chat.

Eventually I stopped and stuck to fandom only, with perhaps a few links to music I liked.

So I say, make a variety of posts and you'll know how you feel by your reaction. Perhaps even have several blogs if you want to keep some of them themed on one area.
