Yep, basically. I literally just saw a post that was

"it actually pisses me off so much that there’s the whole world out there, yet I’m just going to school every day. while I could be off finding wonderful things in foreign cities or climbing mountains or helping people or just wandering, and I feel like I’d learn so much more doing that instead, really."

and like, I just want to shake the OP because it's just BS.

I mean, if that's your dream, go for it, but there are so many things that are taught in schools, like problem solving, (depending on your school), finances/economics, languages, political history, cultures, etc. so you don't go to this other country and be that total asshole while you try to ~learn~

My thought it just "but how are you going to pay for all that"

Oh, they'll just pick up a job here or there, despite not knowing the language, culture, or anything like that.

I mean, they could travel around their own country, maybe, and see about getting jobs their, where they (hopefully) would know the culture (which can vary region to region, but not as much as a different country most of the time), and would know the language, but that wouldn't be ~foreign and ~exotic.

I almost choked on my tea when I saw that post. Aw, you poor, precious, put-upon pretentious little snowflake. Go do your homework.

I feel you.

That'd make me roll my eyes a little, too. I get that school feels like a huge waste of time and I don't entirely disagree with that opinion, but... I'd bet good money those same complaining teenagers spend their weekends/vacations on their asses on front of the TV. You might not be able to climb mountains when you're a teenager, but you could certainly be studying cool and interesting things at the library or online, volunteering at the homeless shelter or exploring your own hometown. But they don't, so I doubt their sincerity and commitment to these high ideals.

Annnnd then you get into the real world and realize it doesn't work that way.

I just want to look kids who think this way in the eye and say, "you will never have more freedom than you do now. When you finish school and begin working, most of your time and energy will be chipped away. You will go weeks, sometimes months, without seeing your friends. You will find yourself wanting to rest rather than go on adventures. When considering travel, you will be consumed with thoughts of expenses and logistics, and will talk yourself out of going more often than not. Within a few years, you will long for the days when your parents paid for everything and your only concern was finishing your homework. You will long for it."

(Not that being an adult is really all that bad. But still. You lose something when you grow up, and you spend your childhood convinced that you'll only gain).

Yeeep. So much this.

School kids get the summer off. The whole summer! I get 10 holiday days a year and two weeks of vacation/sick days.

Oh god this. You don't know how much I wish I still had days where I had like, 4 excused absences that I can take on ANY day of the week. Now? I have to pick which days I want off and since I've only been working at my current job for not even a year and a half yet, I can't get fucking Fridays off, at all. The people who have 15 to 30 years on me can get them willy nilly, but me? Nope. So that means my con going days are pretty much shot. Not to mention, as you said, the whole expenses thing comes up.

I wanted to go to our local con this year, but looking at my latest pay check that week, the rent coming up the next week and how it's usually almost $60 just to get in the door, never mind going to buy food or if you wanted to buy things in the dealer room, I ended up saying fuck it cause it wasn't worth it to go. and I've been going for the last 8-9 years...

I feel like that a lot, and then feel bitter and old afterwards. I don't like having a desire to tell people life stinks!
