I think I misread the language thing in the secret. I was reading it as people surprised how well she spoke the language of her birth country.

But as for the name thing, I'm white and grew up in a very white area in the US and I got asked this question a lot. Everyone got asked this question, Americans are oddly obsessed with heritage and "where you came from". I've always just assumed it's one of those things.

Obviously I have no place to say anything about racism or that experience. I do see your point and how OPs secret could be interpreted through your experience rather than mine.

Thanks for understanding, anon. I admit this secret strikes a little close to home for me. It doesn't happen as often as it used to, but it still feels uncomfortable when people point out that I'm "foreign", even if they don't mean it negatively.
