Poll question: Your opinion

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-14 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
At present the setup is as I put up a bunch of threads across three or four days asking for recommendations, then I take the most popular recommendations (that is to say any recommendation that has at least one person seconding it) and make the poll.

As suggested by galerian-ash.livejournal.com above some people aren't on every day, and any recommendations made on the last day have a disadvantage when it comes to getting secondings.

So my question is this: would it be better to include all recommendations made over the three / four days? Poll will be longer (and might take a few seconds more to open, I don't know for sure) but I don't see a significant drawback to doing it that way.

What do you all think?

I like the idea of including all of them, even if no one seconded them. It's easy to miss posts even if you are here every day!

Noted. My follow up would be: should I try and amend the current poll even though it might also put the new arrivals at a disadvantage? Or should I the other books to net months poll?

I don't think it's a big deal either way. I'm kind of in favor of what gets things going fastest. I do think you should just roll with the poll that we have now, and if people want to suggest again for the next round, add every book suggested to the poll then.

Cool. Thanks for the input.

Nothing wrong with just doing all the ones that are mentioned. People are welcome to "second" things and say stuff about the books that might pique others' interests - and it might make voting easier for some.

I would prefer if you included all the books mentioned, unless it gets really long and unwieldy.

Ditto. Just keep this poll, then do another poll with the books you missed, then pick the highest three and get people to vote/comment again.

so we'd finish off the voting process in, what, 2 weeks? that just seems like a long time to me

that sounds like a long way to do it.
Would it be preferred to just scrap todays poll, and just start again tomorrow?

Uh, I meant in future. We can suggest the books that didn't get included this time then.

I'm copy pasting some of my own post here but;

perhaps consider putting all titles into an excel sheet and shuffle them? Then it can truly be a new book experience for most people rather than a book poll popularity contest?

Because chances are most people have read or tried to read the well known ones there so if it becomes a semi random shuffle from the suggestions it'd be more likely to be new to people - maybe sort by genre so it can be shuffled out of a theme each week?
