Music recs?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone have any recs similar to Nick Drake, Jaymay, early Laura Marling, Simon & Garfunkel and Don McLean? Nice voices, soft acoustic guitar, interesting lyrics, preferably melancholy. Except for Cat Stevens, who I don't like.

Thanks!

Townes Van Zandt. Flyin' Shoes

Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters - although they're a little noisier and closer to rock, their lyrics are pretty excellent. Salvador Sanchez and Last Tide/Floating

Arab Strap - probably more depressing and melancholy than you're asking for. Here We Go

Leonard Cohen if you haven't listened to him. Also, I freaking love Laura Marling so... more Laura Marling I guess. You're not a fan of her more recent stuff I take it?

Try Lauren O'Connell: https://www.youtube.com/user/LaurenOC12
She's not soft on every song, but I think in general she fits that aesthetic. For starters, I suggest White Noise, Out Of Focus, or Oncoming Traffic.

Giving it a shot:
The Paper Kites
Ingrid Michaelson's first few albums (you probably already know of her)
Radical Face - not sure how well he matches up to what you want but his Family Tree albums are all acoustic instruments and I always want to recommend him

Wilco
Iron and Wine
The Boy Least likely to
The Honey Trees

(This was an old roommate's playlist. I am more into Motorhead, Nine Inch Nails and Joy Division. To say the least, we didn't swap records much.)
