Yeaaaah no matter how the author is trying to paint it, that sounds like a shippy fic. Maybe they had gen in mind when they started it but then it drifted into ship territory and the author refuses to admit it. Or it's some kind of ploy to get the shippers' attention.

I can understand some of this stuff being platonic if it's IC for one of the characters to be very affectionate in a non-romantic way. But if there's kissing on the lips while holding each other in bed, then no. That to me is shippy. Like if I was reading a fic suspecting it to be gen and came across two characters that I don't want to see shipped together doing those things, I would lose all interest and stop reading.

I think some readers/writers are specifically into this sort of thing. Shippy fic that they insist on labelling gen. There's so much of it about, it has to be catering to a specific taste and not just a ploy or a drift.

My guesses are that the readers/writers don't want to admit they like shipping, or romance, or that they find overtly sexual scenes uncomfortable for a variety of reasons. Hence this fic category has arisen.

I can definitely believe that since I've seen a lot of it around as well.

And also "super close bffs with benefits who really love each other but aren't dating": it may not be "romantic" but I still consider that a ship. Something like that is not what I'd want to find if I were looking for gen.

My guess is that it has more to do with the way that people get pissy and whine about it if a fic that's labeled with a relationship doesn't have smut in it. You hear enough people complaining that a fic has "wasted their time" because it didn't have an overt sex scene and you either start labeling your fics so those people don't read them or you haul off and start hitting people with a spoon.

There's nothing to indicate that the kissing is on the lips, though.

I agree with you, but only because of the "greyromantic" tag. Now THAT's one surefire indication that the fic turned out to be shippy.
