This one is my favorite, but honorable mention should go to queerplatonic. It's friendship, but, I don't know, queer somehow? Maybe you listen to a lot of Tegan and Sara when you hang out? Is there a queer handshake involved? I have so many questions and so few answers.

So far as I can tell, queerplatonic means you're very close friends but you're not in a romantic relationship. (For those of you who read Homestuck: moirallegiance appears to be a pretty close analogue, and to predate at least the naming of the queerplatonic by several months.)

I understand the concept, but not why it needs such an incomprehensible name. Then again, I have definite conservative views on the importance of proper word creation from known words or components (basically: I should be able to take your word apart into its components and come up with the rough meaning), so you can disregard me on that if you want.

So basically BFF's but with a heavy does of best and sharing the same gender?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
They don't have to be the same gender. The queerplatonic is theoretically open to any combination of people who care to call themselves that. Emphasis on the theoretically.

....I need to know the context this was used. It's making me giggle.

AFAIK queerplatonic is just same-sex platonic romance.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Pssst, it's called friendship.

Platonic romance is called friendship???
Like???????

...I'm no connoisseur of romance, being an aromantic/asexual myself, but something tells me you've got it all wrong, anon.

You can't have a platonic romance. Platonic is specifically used to distance a relationship from romance. It would be like having a white black.

"Platonic" means "non-sexual". Asexuals aren't necessarily aromantic, hence platonic romance is a possibility.

....no

It may mean "non-romantic" OR "non-sexual".
