Heh I had the exact same problem. Worst was it was coming out on my birthday week, so I was really stoked to go to it, then a couple weeks before it came out, I realized just how limited the release was, and the nearest theater airing it was over an hour away. A little more research showed I could just buy it off Amazon and watch it whenever I wanted for as many times as I wanted, so I did that instead. $15 for a movie I've waited 7 years to see seemed like a good enough investment.
