Right. If a person's group isn't actively being persecuted, then that person should not dislike or feel uncomfortable when members of her/his group are trashed or when her/his group in general is trashed.

Good thing that this is not what is happening here.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I fail to see how that isn't what's happening. People who are members of OP's group are being trashed. OP does not like it. The end.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Your comment implies that they're being trashed on the basis of belonging to the OP's group, and that's not true.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
And the comment to which I replied implies that OP cannot feel uncomfortable unless the people being bashed are the members of a persecuted group. My comment is in reference to that specific attitude, which is wrong, not in reference to whatever valid reasons (and I think there certainly are some) someone might have for criticizing the two pictured actresses.

So just to be clear here. Your position is that it is OK to feel uncomfortable or defensive when members of their group are trashed no matter what or why?

So, for instance, as an Irish-American who was raised Catholic, it's perfectly valid for me to defend any Irish-American Catholic, no matter what? I should be defending Pat Buchanan despite his racism and Confederate apologia, or whatever?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
No. That's not my position.

My position is that "it doesn't matter, because you aren't persecuted" isn't a valid response to "I dislike that a member of my group was bashed."

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
okay, I see where you're coming from. thanks for the clarification. still not sure if i think that's a valid position but it makes more sense, thank you.
