What was the first comic or manga you read?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Title says it all!

I can't remember what my first comic EVER was, but I think it was either Batman or Spider-Man. For manga specifically, it was definitely Cardcaptor Sakura.

Doraemon. Like every other kid of my generation who grew up in Asia.

And my first anime was Sailor Moon, so the above applies as well.

Calvin and Hobbes, probably, if you count seeking out newspaper strips.

Non-newspaper would have been Maus, but that was for a school project. Saga's the first one I've read on my own accord.

Manga-wise, I'm not sure if it was Yotsuba&! or Hana-Kimi.

My first comic was an issue of X-Men I got for free. I didn't have any grasp of the continuity, so I wasn't interested in reading more.

My first manga was something Tokyopop serialized in weekly newspaper comics. I think the adorable comedy Peach Fuzz was the very first. (They tried a couple more, but the only other good one was Van Von Hunter.)

The first Western comic (that wasn't Archie) was an issue of some spinoff of The Crow. I don't remember what spinoff/sequel it was, but the issue had some really gorgeous art and coloring.

The first manga was Sailor Moon. My mom bought it for me while I was waiting in the emergency room with a broken foot, since she knew I liked Sailor Moon a lot. (I was actually only in the emergency room because I declined the chance to go to the bookstore and waste all my allowance on Sailor Moon merchandise 'cos my foot hurt. So my mom demanded we go to the hospital because something was clearly wrong.)

Don't really read comics, but my first manga was either Death Note or Comic Party.

Outside of newspaper strips, nothing until I found Gunnerkrigg Court. I've generally had a hard time following full-fledged stories in graphic form. My brain is weird about it. I'm getting better, though.

First comic is so long ago no way I can remember. I think my first memory of a comic was batman.

First anime was Sailor Moon.

I got into manga when my friend lent me her Fruits Basket collection in middle school.

First comic I read was Deadpool because he sounded interesting.

Asterix the Gaul.

We had piles of them around the house in about 4 languages. They were hard to get in English at the start and I think my parents were hoping I'd magically become fluent in French and Dutch by osmosis.

The first comic I bought myself was X-Men.

Garfield or Calvin and Hobbes. Manga might have been DBZ.

Haha, probably Garfield. The first manga...maybe Yu Yu Hakusho? Or Dragonball Z.

Don't remember. I think what turned me on to comics was likely the X-Man broodwar saga.

For Manga, probably Akira or Ghost in the Shell in bound copies.

Do the Disney things like Scrooge McDuck count? I remember having some of those when I was a really little kid, but then around 1989 I discovered the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles via the NES and arcade games, and got into the comics as well... and that was all I read for a few years, until a friend recommended Uncanny X-Men and the recently launched "just plain" X-Men.

As for manga... thinking about it, I think I picked up a raw of Sailor Moon volume 1 back in like 1995 and found a txt document with a fan translation online, but I could never get any other volumes, so I just wound up reading the translations without pictures. First series I got more than one volume of and actually FOLLOWED, despite the lack of translation, was Get Backers. Have the entire run in Japanese, and thanks to the eventual licensed translation getting cancelled RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LAST ARC, I still don't exactly understand what happened at the end. :P

Inuyasha was my first manga, and I still have the many, many volumes I collected.

And Spiderman was my first ever comic, I can't really remember what happened in it though, it was one of the old ones since it was my dad's.

The first comic I remember reading was one of the Hulk origin stories, based on what I remember about it. The first manga was Pokemon Adventures, which I have gotten back into lately (found one of the new RS English translations at the store I do MTG prereleases at).

No idea what my first Western comic was (probably Garfield, I had a ton of Garfield books when I was a kid) but my first manga was Magic Knight Rayearth, the old Mixx editions from way back when. I was out with my dad one weekend and he dropped me off at a Borders to amuse myself while he did some shopping, and while wandering around the bookstore I stumbled upon the teeny tiny late-90s manga selection. MKR looked sorta Sailor Moon like and I liked Sailor Moon, so I sat down and started to read the first volume and pretty much fell in love. Rayearth also ended up being the first anime I ever bought and basically the thing that really made me an anime fan so I have great residual fondness for it.

My first manga was Yugioh, which I picked up a Shonen Jump volume for (Yugi was on the cover) after I fell headfirst into the anime. That lead me to the first manga I followed hard-core, which was Naruto.

I remember the first time I read Naruto exactly. I'd finished the Yugioh chapters and started reading through the rest of the book. It was the chapter that Haku got stabbed through the chest by Kakashi. I was shocked and a bit frightened by all the blood because I'd been steered toward Barbie and Ponies and Tiger Beat before Yugioh, but intrigued enough to read Naruto in the next volume I bought and it all went downhill from there.

My first was Tina Anderson's Only Words. I liked it a lot, but was disappointed in almost all the yaoi/boy's love I tried after that. I enjoy graphic novels now, though.

First manga I ever read was Marmalade Boy. One of my friends was reading it in class and I asked, "Why are you reading that backwards?" and the rest is history.

I think it was GetBackers. My little sister bought one (something like Perfect Boyfriend or Something Girl Boy, can't remember) and I sort of flipped through it. I found the format odd (L -> R) and thought the homoerotic subtext was unexpected. I scanned GetBackers in the store but never did end up reading it all the way through. Petshop of Horrors might have been the first I actually collected.

In comics, the first I read was X-Men. I was in middle school, my brother took me to the mall and he bought an issue of X-Men for me. I really liked Rogue and Gambit, thought Storm was foxy, and so on. But I didn't read comics seriously until maybe 3 years ago when I started reading Ultimate Comics Spider-Man (Miles Morales ftw).

Most likely some issue of the Donald Duck comics, though I'm not sure as I read plenty of my dad's old comics when I was little, ranging from Tintin and Spirou to Yoko Tsuno and Modesty Blaise.

My first manga was Ranma 1/2, the 3rd volume of it to be precise. I remember that as my sister got it for her birthday and proceeded to give it to me the second the birthday party was over.

Sailor Moon. It was running in my local kiosk and the price was enough for my elementary kid pocket money.

I read them so close together that I'm not entirely sure which was first, but it's a toss up between Peach Girl, MARS, and Magic Knight Rayearth.
