Video games are the only OSTs I've ever really listened to, and the standouts there are Legend of Mana, Vagrant Story, and Symphony of the Night, hands down. LoM probably wins overall.

And I don't really usually listen to one at a time unless it's brand new and I don't know it yet, but throw lots of video game musics of a particular type (battle themes, overworld themes, snowy area themes) onto a playlist and shuffle... but after doing FF: Mystic Quest cosplay at a recent con with someone else who also doesn't hate the game and will take every opportunity to point out that if nothing else, the OST is awesome... I have been listening to that a bit. ;)

Do you have to play a game to enjoy its soundtrack or does that not matter to you? For games it doesn't matter to me but for movies I need context.

Context definitely makes me appreciate some tracks more than I would have otherwise, probably for the same reason as movies for you - if there's a track that's "nice enough" but is from a scene that I found especially compelling, of course I'm going to like it more, because I'll be replaying it in my head... and then there's massive nostalgia for things like old 8-bit midis. I mean, no one is going to think the music from River City Ransom rocks by today's standards, but it makes me pretty darned happy. ;)

But there are some tracks on my playlists from games that never got released in the States and I have no idea what genre they even are, but the OST was composed by the same composer who did other games I liked the OSTs of, and have a similar style and level of awesome to the composer's other work. And then there's at least one track I have from a game I never played because several people who share my taste in games say it sucked horribly, but I have to admit the vocal theme is very pretty.
