Poll

Book Selection May 2014

Ok, I know I've made a bit of a hash of this months book club, but I think we aught to just press on and pretend everything is fine. 8) Next month will be better, everything will be properly labelled, and it will include all recommendations, so if you're disappointed that you're book wasint in the running this month, I am very sorry, but if you throw it into the mix the next time we do a recommendation thread it will be on next months poll.

Right, if you've not voted yet, here's the set up: You get one chance to vote, but that one chance can include as many selections from the list as you want.

I have an idea.

Just fucking pick a book yourself.

Trying to involve absofuckinglutely everyone in your book club's book decision is turning out to be a clusterfuck and will always be a clusterfuck. This is yours. You've gotten feedback and seen what's popular. So just pick.

You had a great poll! And someone was angry because an anonymous dot showed up on a map? So you scrapped those results and picked a new poll that fewer people are seeing?

You're stretching this out far enough that I guarantee a lot of people have lost interest. Don't do this next month.

I can hear you rolling your eyes but you're making me roll my eyes more.

Re: Poll

On one hand, I agree. On the other? You're being pretty harsh here.

Harsh gets heard, anon.

Re: Poll

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Sometimes. It really depends on the person. There are a lot of people out there who respond badly to harsh.

Re: Poll

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
This. Heard, maybe, but that doesn't mean heeded.

Re: Poll

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-16 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno. I can understand why people might be upset by a poll that knows (more or less) where you live. I've had had second thoughts about submitting to that poll if I'd known. Maybe paranoia, but, you know, you're own safety and comfort is important.

Won't be picking a book myself, tho. I have little confidence in my taste. This way I only need to have confidence in the majority's taste (and so far it's panning out. I am quite excited to read any of the top runners this month, I assume I'm not the only one.)

Yeah, I've fucked this month up quite badly, but fuck it, by Friday we'll have a book and we can get on to the fun stuff. The people who've lost interest will hopefully have renewed interest by Friday when we have a pick, you know? I mean that at this stage, people can only have lost interest in the (badly handled) selection process, any one who just want's me to shut up and pick a book will find them selves in that exact situation come Friday.

But yeah, the plan for next months selection: 3 day's of recommendation's 4 day's of the poll, properly labelled and ready, book picked, book read, discuss. fun had by all.

I have little confidence in my taste.

This is just silly, dude. Your taste is your taste! And it's your book club!

But yeah, the plan for next months selection: 3 day's of recommendation's 4 day's of the poll, properly labelled and ready, book picked, book read, discuss. fun had by all.

This sounds good! Suggestion, though: start the new book recommendations the day people are supposed to be finished with the previous book. This will make sure the invested people are still around.

Re: Poll

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-16 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm comfortable with my tastes as they relate to me, but it is not My Bookclub. My Bookclub, has only me as a member and would be... well fascinating, frankly, but not terribly diverse and probably not very fun for everyone else here. It's the FS book, it needs to be suitable and fun (to some degree) for everyone, and hopefully once we get past this particular quagmire it will be.

That's the plan. Book will be picked on Friday giving people a bot of time to find the book, people start reading sometime near 1st of may, people stop reading and have a proper discussion sometime near end of may (dates to follow) where upon the new rec thread will be added and ready for input. First month

I totally agree with Chard, actually. I was pretty psyched for this, but if it's taking us this long to pick one fucking book, I'm out.

Re: Poll

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-16 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry. What would you recommend to steam-line it while still giving a significant number of people a chance to rec/vote?

Re: Poll

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Waaaaaait wait wait wait wait. Are you telling me the poll that was posted Monday was geo-located/IP tagged? Because there were no warnings that I saw to that effect; I certainly would not have been upset or ragequit, or anything, but yeah, I wouldn't have voted in the poll.

(This is FS' resident Paranoia!Anon who worries about the IP logging every time it is on BTW.)

Re: Poll

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Chard may be harsh (I don't think so), but she has a point; generally the moderator of RL book clubs gets to pick whatever said book club will be reading. Since there are enough people on FS who will drop in/out based on the selection/month/participation, it would move along a lot more efficiently, if you just pick one book a month (albeit from suggestions posted in the thread), then you might get a different set of participants every month, which can only be a good thing.

It let me vote again. I voted last night too.

Fingersmith's not in the lead any more but I might buy that book anyway now. I fancy it.

Re: Poll

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-16 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
... ok, well I don't know. it only let me vote once. Maybe you have a changing IP thingy? Anyway I don't know if there' s anything I can do to make it so everyone get's only one vote, short of finding a new poll. If you have any suggestions for next month's round, I' open to hear them.

Actually, I'm probably going to put fingersmith into next months poll as my own recommendation if it doesn't win this month. It sounds fun.

Re: Poll

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
First off, sorry to see there won't be a new poll. I had hoped for one that would include all the suggestions, as a lot of people seemed to want that yesterday. But I guess I'll just be back next month instead (everything on the list I've either already read or have no interest in).

Secondly, ignore the troll. Nothing but typical behavior, so you shouldn't pay it any heed.

Secondly, ignore the troll

You're going to be fun when someone disagrees with you about a book in the thing that's about discussing books

Re: Poll

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know, but I've re-started the poll once already. My bad entirely, but I've made an executive decision to just say "Fuck it" and press on. We'll do a proper one next month, but chardmonster's right. it's a book club, we can't spend the full month just picking a book. the important thing is to press on, get a book chosen (hopefully leaving people some time to track down the book) and learn from this month's mistakes next month.

You may be right about chardmonster, she may just be taking the opportunity to put someone down for fun... or maybe she's trying to help and is just the type of person who finds it easy to communicate in criticism. I'm not saying it's inherently a bad way to be, but it is easy to be misunderstood as a troll, and if that's the case I kind of have an obligation to pay her heed. I can't just say "I don't like the way you choose to express your thoughts, so I'm going to ignore you." Well, I can, but that'd make me someone I do not wish to be.

I kind of have an obligation to pay her heed.

You never have the obligation to pay me or anyone else "heed." Jesus, dude.

Yes, you are totally allowed to ignore certain people if they annoy you. This is a fandom website, not your job!

Re: Poll

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-16 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree. If I assume you're trying to be genuinely helpful (and I do believe you are) and I dismiss you as a troll because I don't like how you communicate, that makes me at best just a little petulant, and not at all someone I want to be. I don't have to do what you tell me, but I owe you the basic level of respect to consider your input.

HEED ME!

[personal profile] chardmonster 2014-04-16 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, but--just not dealing with someone who annoys you isn't "dismissing them as a troll." It's preserving your mood. Even if someone's trying to be helpful, you're still allowed to ignore them so long as you do so politely. There are multiple people interested in book club and you don't have to address all of us--you've got other stuff to do!

I didn't mean my first comment about picking a book to come off as that harsh, by the way.

Re: HEED ME!

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-16 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"you're still allowed to ignore them so long as you do so politely"

Yeah, I'm allowed to, but it's still not very nice. You're trying to help, however it comes off, you (or anyone else trying to help) deserves me doing my best to be nice. I don't think we'll agree on this. This is just how I choose to conduct myself.

Re: Poll

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
You may not have noticed, but chardmonster has been active in the book club threads since they started, and recommended some books for it. Unless she's that invested in being a troll (and I really, really don't think that she is), what you saw above was harsh frustration, not trolling.

I know that there are some people here who aren't liked and have done some trolly things, but jesus fuck, not everything that they post is automatically "trolling," even if it's not said nicely.
