I suppose in some way Carnivale was a stereotypical role, because he was part of a 'freak show' but the character was a real rounded person, within the batshit weirdness that was the show, of course.

I wouldn't say Anderson's role in Carnivale was stereotypical, though, because his character wasn't a circus performer. He was the manager, and the show kept him on a level with the other non-"freak" characters.
