Yeahhhhhhh I think you pretty much have to regard them as basically separate entities, honestly. IMO the difference between them in terms of tone and content is just too much to reconcile, and I think you really kind of have to approach it with that mindset.

They're honestly the perfect film and novel combination in the way they take the same themes and settings and approach them in entirely the opposite direction.

I love both. Top ten favorite movie of all time, one of my favorite books of all time.
