Let's face it: every PKD movie adaptation has to be taken as its own entity, because they are so different from the source material. I mean, having read several of the stories that were adapted, I barely recognize them.

And this is not to say that one or the other is superior. They're just really different.

+1

I don't think there's a way to actually accurately adapt PKD's stuff. It's just so weird and mindfucky, and it's so inside someone's head that it'd be impossible to portray from outside someone's head? If that makes sense. It's like how most Lovecraft is unadaptable too.

The plotlines are adaptable but the actual feel is not, in conclusion.

It's true, which makes it weird that PKD has been adapted as much as he has. And how much of the adaptations are good, or at least watchable (I don't know if I'd go so far as to go call Total Recall a good movie, for instance, but it does rule). It's impossible to adapt his writing but the concepts from his imagination are really fascinating for filmmakers I guess.

It should theoretically be doable--I mean, Satoshi Kon did most of the same stuff on screen that Dick did in his books. The problem is that either the folks doing the adaptations don't really try to mimic the original, or they adapt way too directly. (The latter was the downfall of A Scanner Darkly.)

I liked A Scanner Darkly and find Blade Runner massively overrated. Dark City did the same sort of thing much better IMO.
