Protip: Not entirely true. I've managed it more than once. (And yes, the particular group that was involved would have said something.)

I doubt it. Let's say you're correct in assuming those people would say something individually (because, idk, they all care about you). You have to consider that in a group situation, you have no way of knowing how much the bystander effect was in effect, and how much people might not have been willing to publically bring up a contentious issue.

tl;dr just because no one said anything doesn't mean they didn't know. I almost guarantee you, someone did know.
