Historical romances

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Today my sister and I were discussion fanfic Regency romance AUs, and she wondered if there were any US time periods that got similarly romance-genre-ified. We came up with maybe Wild West. Any thoughts? (Or just offer other historical romance sub-genres you find notable.)

Prohibition-era? I like it, anyway... But Wild West too, yeah.

The wild West/1890's (aka when cowboys were at their height).

Wild West for sure. Maybe the 20's too.

Kind of depends on the fandom. My main fandom is... Well. Whatever time period they feel like. And they're pretty common.

You're totally right. I used to read a lot of Harlequin Historical back in the day, and if a book was set in the USA it was almost always in that period of time. Cowboys, native indians, and Pinkerton agents were the most popular themes -- but there were others as well.

(Ugh, when are OpenIDs gonna be able to edit...)

I just realized I misread your post! You were talking about fanfiction, and my reply was about books in general. Sorry 'bout that >_<

ayrt

I actually meant to ask about books in general, and it came out as a question about fanfic! So no need to apologize.

Hey, that's great then! XDb

I want to say the Civil War gets a lot of that in published fiction, but honestly, that's just a hunch. It's got tragic romance potential coming out the ears, though.

The Wild West, which Texas apparently never moved out of. Going through the romance novel section at the local library, half of the books are either Regency-ish historicals or somehow involve Texas cowboys.

Antebellum South got pretty romanticized, and I think the 1950s are getting to that point.

The Revolutionary War gets romantizied from time to time.

Antebellum South and the Civil War, yes, majorly. Blame Gone With The Wind. The Wild West, again. Also the late 1800s/early 1900s, in ghost stories and stories set on the East coast (sea captains, smugglers and lonely widows living in cliff houses by the sea).
