Tell me about the PS3, please

[personal profile] castle_anon 2014-04-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
A local pawn shop is selling them for about $130, and as I need a blu-ray player, I'm thinking about buying one. And if the rate I get through my Xbox 360 backlog of games is any indication, it could be a loooooong time before I exhaust my game options.

But I'm curious about a few things:
1. Do you have to buy into any sort of playstation subscription to be able to access things like Netflix? I just let my Xbox Live membership lapse, and if I could avoid updating it without having to give Sony money, I probably would.

2. Do you get used to those controllers? I've only used them a handful of times, and the shape and size are just so different to Xbox that I was having a really hard time with them.

3. Has anybody bought a used PS3 before? I'm assuming all traces of the previous owner are scrubbed and I can easily build my own profile (if that's even a thing), right?

1) You can register a Playstation Network account for free, which gets you multiplayer and all that. There's a subscription service you can get that gives you all sorts of goodies, but it's entirely optional. You don't have to pay Sony anything extra to access Netflix.

2) Probably, but I've only gone the opposite way (PS to Xbox), so I can't say for sure.

3) If it hasn't already been reset, you can do it yourself.

1. You don't have to have a PS+ subscription to use Netflix. You do need a subscription to Netflix.

2. I hate xbox controllers, so idk what you mean.

3. Depends where you're buying it from. The pawn shop might have left data on it, but you can always make a new user profile or delete a user profile on your PS3. That said, I probably wouldn't buy a used one just because you're unlikely to get more than a year or two out of it, depending on the age of the machine itself. My first PS3 was bought very nearly at launch and lasted me around 5-6 years. My next _two_ PS3s were used and they lasted less than a year each.

PSN accounts are free. Multi is free. Obviously you'll need a Netflix account and all that, but that's separate.

PSN Plus is a subscription service -- you get a lot of free games out of it on top of super deals and shit.

The thing is, PS3s are finicky. Mine is 3 years old and the disc drive makes a grinding noise sometimes. I wouldn't trust a used one.

3. I've bought a used one. It was already 4 or 5 years old when I bought it (idk how old it was exactly, it was from the first year batch though), and I got another 2 out of it before it started having over-heating issues. Not bad enough to be considered 'broken', but I wasn't comfortable risking my save games so I bought a new one.

PS3s are way more reliable than a 360, but they aren't magic. If you buy used, you should be mentally prepared to buy another one in a few years.

Thanks guys. Sounds like I should look for new ones, if I buy one. Target is selling the 250 GB with Last of Us bundle for $250...I'm sure I could get just a blu-ray player (probably even one that also accesses Netflix) for much less, so now I just have to decide how much I *really* care about the game console.

I bought my bluray player two years ago on Amazon Black Friday sale for $90. It has built in wifi so as long as you have a Netflix account and wifi in your house, it'll play. I love it so much.
